In 1963 Ministry of Education, Govt. of India set up Central Schools (now known as Kendriya Vidyalayas) by taking over 20 Regimental Schools run by Ministry of Defence. These Kendriya Vidyalayas are now managed by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan which is an autonomous body fully financed by Central Govt. Now there are about 933 Kendriya Vidyalayas spread through the country. There are two Kendriya Vidyalayas abroad also i.e. in Moscow and Kathmandu. The main objectives of Kendriya Vidyalayas are:- To cater to the educational needs of children of transferable Central Govt. employees including defence and para-military personnel by providing a common pattern of education. To pursue excellence and set the pace in the field of school education. To initiate and promote experimentation and innovations in education in collaboration with other bodies like CBSE & NCERT etc. and To develop the spirit of national integration and create a sense of 'Indian ness' among children.
